Toshiba Air Conditioning - Provides multiple air-conditioning solutions to UK’s largest university

Toshiba Air Conditioning is providing different solutions to satisfy the unique requirements of two neighbouring building developments at the UK’s largest university campus: the new, large Alan Turing Building and the refurbished Schuster Building, which house the School of Physics and Astronomy and the School of Mathematics at The University of Manchester. Toshiba satisfied both facilities, offering equipment that meets low noise criteria for learning environments and is highly reliable.

The two buildings are used for a wide range of academic activities. In the striking, shaded glass and steel, 4-storey, cantilevered Alan Turing Building offices, the computer cluster and study areas all require air conditioning. This is provided by eight heat recovery Toshiba VRF (variable refrigerant flow) systems incorporating 80-plus ducted indoor units that use non-ozone depleting R410A refrigerant. The total cooling and heating capacity is 380 kW cooling and 357 kW heating. Additionally, a small server room is constantly cooled by a pair of Toshiba digital inverter split systems, which are suited to this task due to their reputation for reliability and their ability to keep consistently within 1.5 degrees of the set point.

In the refurbished Schuster building the air-conditioning systems are required to manage the heat gain from computer equipment. Server suites, IT rooms, computer clusters and other laboratories and similar facilities use a combination of 2-pipe heat pump VRF and 40 Toshiba R410A Digital Inverter heat pump split systems to keep temperatures constant all year round.

The air-conditioning contractor was Toshiba-accredited installer Delta Environmental. Emcor was the mechanical services contractor and Jacobs Engineering the consulting engineers. The main building contractor was HBG.
