Mayfield Construction Company Ltd - Firm on form at awards

The Mayfield Construction Company Ltd is celebrating after scooping three titles at the annual British Association of Landscape Industry (BALI) Awards for the Best, Mainly Hardlandscaping Scheme, Best Employer and Use of Recycled Materials.

The Merseyside firm, part of the McKean Group, collected the Best, Mainly Hardlandscaping and Use of Recycled Materials awards for their ongoing £6 million project for St Helens Metropolitan Borough Council.

The project, scheduled for completion in next few weeks, will provide a new look town centre to compete with other local shopping centres. It focuses on enhancing the environment of the core town centre through a series of contemporary, forward looking improvements to the streetscape and the public realm.

The project, a partnership programme involving early consultation with the council before construction and which is on time and under-budget, includes a new suite of modern street furniture and pedestrian signage, art work at ‘gateway' points and new high-level street lighting with feature lighting to buildings.

Kevin Duffy, director at Mayfield, also collected the Best Employer award on behalf of the firm. The award is given to a company which demonstrates a pro-active and innovative approach to skills development and fosters career progression.

He said: “These awards demonstrate our innovation and dynamism as a company and reflect the importance we place on the development of our workforce.

“The St Helens project is a leading regeneration initiative and we have high hopes that it will stimulate interest in the town centre.

“Staff are at the forefront of our business and it is very satisfying to be rewarded for our career development schemes. During the project, we embarked upon an apprenticeship scheme which helps tradesmen back to employment. Two mature apprentices joined the St Helen’s project and secured full-time employment after a 13-week trial which, again, shows our commitment to employee growth and development.

“We are very pleased to have been selected for these accolades and hopefully they are the first of many.”

The firm were also rewarded for their use of existing materials and minimising landfill use on the St Helens project, winning the Use of Recycled Materials category.

The annual British Association of Landscape Industry (BALI) Awards showcase the highest levels of skill and professionalism in the industry. They have been running since 1976 and have grown to become the largest and most prestigious event in the industry, attracting interest from across the world.

There are 16 different categories covering domestic, commercial, grounds maintenance and interior projects.
