DLG Architects - Announce Wakefield Revamp

The Leeds office of DLG Architects has revealed plans for a major revamp of the popular Ridings Shopping Centre in Wakefield on behalf of the centre’s managing company, Moorfield Group. The proposed new scheme, worth £25 million, has recently been submitted for planning approval.

The proposals consist of a three storey, 110,000 sq ft, retail extension that will include a redesigned food court and larger, more modern retail units that will give existing retailers the opportunity to expand, and attract brand new retailers looking for contemporary new premises.

The new look will be reflected throughout the centre by the inclusion of new food outlets and two feature lifts within the prominent circulation hubs that aim to satisfy the demands of increased footfall, and plans have already been approved for an expansive curved glass atrium to create a striking new entrance at Cathedral Walk. Additional entrances at Almshouse Lane and Kirkgate will use glass and natural light to enhance the shopping environment and improve interaction between the centre and the public realm.

Martin Cranage, Director at DLG Architects in Leeds comments: “The new extension to the Ridings Centre is a perfect opportunity for Wakefield to establish itself as an up and coming new retail destination. The new, larger units and improved aesthetics in the centre have the potential to act as a catalyst, bringing new retailers to the centre increasing footfall and local demand.”

Moorfield Group, acquired the Ridings in November 2005 and are committed to invest significant funds to revitalise the centre. Mark Holmes at Moorfield Group said: “Wakefield is a city where we see enormous potential for growth, and we are really excited about the plans for its regeneration.”

“When we first acquired The Ridings back in November 2005, Moorfield recognised the huge potential that Wakefield has to establish itself strongly as a retail destination, and we are committed to helping this process through further investment in the Centre.

“As we now move towards realising that commitment with these plans for The Ridings, we look forward to playing our part in the wider regeneration of the City and continuing to work closely with the Council.”

The new plans are fully supported by the Wakefield Metropolitan District Council, keen to attract new retail projects to Wakefield. Work on the entrances and internal features is due to begin in January and last for approximately 6 months. Subject to planning approval the retail expansion work is due to be completed in 2009.
