ISG has added to its growing tally of Sure Start
projects across Greater Manchester, securing two new schemes valued
at around £700K. Working under an influential framework partnership
with Manchester City Council, the contractor will create two new
centres at Barlow Hall Primary School in Chorlton and Broom Avenue
in Levenshulme.
Sure Start centres are designed to provide a comprehensive range of
facilities for children under five years old and their families. As
a key government initiative, the Sure Start scheme aims to give
children the best possible start in life and centres provide
affordable childcare places, whilst also acting as a resource to
support parents.
ISG has now commenced work to refurbish an existing disused nursery
building at Barlow Hall Primary School. The contractor will strip
out the single-storey building and reconfigure the space to provide
a range of new Sure Start facilities including, a crèche and
playroom, baby change and baby feed rooms, as well as forming
offices, a new reception and installing a kitchen.
At the Broom Avenue Children’s Centre, ISG will refurbish the
existing centre and build an extension to the childcare area to
create a flexible sessional care room. A new reception area will
also be formed, alongside training rooms, group rooms and a health
suite. Mechanical & electrical services will be replaced throughout
the building and the contractor will also upgrade the centre’s
external play area. Both schemes are scheduled for completion early
in the New Year.
Gary Hughes, construction director at ISG Totty Building, commented:
“The framework procurement route provides Manchester City Council
with a highly efficient method of achieving Sure Start delivery
targets. With multiple projects carried out simultaneously, ISG is
able to add real value to every scheme, whilst the Council benefits
from greater transparency and quality assurance within the build
process.”
