Hanson Building Products has double cause to
celebrate following the recent 2007 Brick Awards. The company, which
is the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of bricks, was awarded
the top accolade in two categories at the prestigious London event
organised by the Brick Development Association.
The winning projects in which Hanson bricks were specified are the
GMPTE Headquarters, which won the ‘Best Commercial Building’
category, and the Hanson EcoHouseTM for its ‘Innovative Use of Brick
and Clay Products’.
Manchester’s Two Piccadilly Place, known as the GMPTE Headquarters,
was created by architects Weedon Partnership and brickwork
contractors, Carillion. Hanson’s Albinoni and Midnight Blue bricks
were specified for this massive project, which the judges praised
for the skilful way in which the building has been grafted into the
overall cityscape. In particular, the bricks used were praised for
their crisp detailing and their subsequent contribution to the
building’s ordered and methodical appearance.
Two Piccadilly Place, the new headquarters of the Greater Manchester
Public Transport Executive, is the first building to be completed in
a major inner city mixed use development of previously derelict
land. As the busy location demanded a calming architectural effect,
external materials have been restricted to Hanson’s Albinoni bricks,
a cream smooth modular brick in 290 x 90 x 65mm, and capless
glazing.
Located adjacent to Piccadilly Station and one of the primary artery
roads in Manchester, the entire Piccadilly Place development will
eventually provide 675,000 square feet of business, leisure and
residential facilities.
The Hanson EcoHouseTM, constructed earlier this year in the grounds
of the Building Research Establishment (BRE) in Watford, was created
by architects, TP Bennett, and brickwork contractor, Intrepid Build,
using Hanson’s Arden Special Reserve bricks.
This project provides a practical example of the extensive work
being undertaken by the building industry to achieve the zero-carbon
target of 2016. Because the walling system provides pre-finished,
insulated brick/block cavity walls in panels up to 9m x 3m, the
Hanson EcoHouseTM actively demonstrates the advantages of thermal
mass and the effectiveness of stack ventilation.
This concept dwelling also demonstrates many of Hanson’s latest
developments in its ongoing programme of sustainability, modern
masonry construction (MMC) and ‘Smart’ living.
Hanson Building Products offers an extensive range of facing bricks,
incorporating over 300 colours and textures - from smooth, stock and
light textured to heavy textured and tumbled.
