Eco building specialist and author, Nigel
Griffiths is launching Anatomy of an Eco Build, a book which tells
the remarkable story of Great Bow Yard - the first private sector
development of eco-housing in the South West, built by Ecos Homes.
Written for the benefit of developers, architects, planners and
students with an interest in sustainable development, Anatomy of an
Eco Build explains how decisions were made and issues overcome from
concept through to completion.
Ecos Trust, Ecos Homes’ parent organisation, commissioned Nigel to
write the book so that its experiences can help private companies
and public bodies that wish to build sustainably.
Charles Couzens, Executive Director of Ecos Trust comments: “Anatomy
of an Eco Build is an honest and frank account of the development
process, and records how design decisions were made. The owners of
the Great Bow Yard properties are delighted with their homes and
this proves there is a strong market for well designed, sustainably
built housing. Our vision is to show sustainable design and
construction in practice, persuade planners, builders, developers
and estate agents of its practicality, and prove that it meets a
real, and as yet unsatisfied, demand from house buyers - Anatomy of
an Eco Build brings us one step closer to achieving this.”
Great Bow Yard is a unique mixed-use development of 12 eco-homes,
alongside a sympathetically restored Grade II listed warehouse with
offices and workshops based in Langport, Somerset. All the
properties at Great Bow Yard have been built using sustainably
sourced materials, avoiding the use of toxic chemicals which are
commonly found in new houses. They are insulated far above normal
standards for UK construction and incorporate renewable energy
sources and energy-saving devices. The homes have been designed to
substantially reduce carbon emissions and water consumption, use
recycled or sustainable construction materials, meet BRE EcoHomes
rating Excellent and make a positive contribution to the local
economy.
Nigel, who advises private and corporate clients who wish to build
or renovate sustainably, comments: “Developers will find Anatomy of
an Eco Build an invaluable tool, as will other professionals in the
construction process such as architects, engineers, planners and
building control officers. The work will also be of interest to
researchers who are looking for an exemplar project to study modern
understanding of sustainability in development practice.”
