National practice DLG Architects announces the
completion of its £35 million retail development, Willow Place in
Corby for its client Land Securities.
Following 18 months of construction work, Friday 26 October saw the
official opening of the new 175,000 sq ft retail quarter by Mayor of
Corby, Councillor Jean Addison. Located adjacent to and
incorporating part of the existing Queens Square Shopping Centre in
the heart of Corby, Willow Place now provides a much needed shopping
destination for Northamptonshire. Comprising two anchor stores and
20 smaller units, Willow Place is the first phase of a major
realignment of the town centre to meet the demands of the rapidly
expanding catchment in Corby.
The main anchor for the development is TK Maxx, which is taking a
40,000 sq ft unit. Other brands already committed include Arcadia
(Dorothy Perkins, Burton and Evans), JD Sport, WH Smith, New Look,
River Island, Costa Coffee and Superdrug.
Willow Place was designed by DLG with significant frontage to
provide an important gateway approach to the town centre. At its
heart, a feature tensile roof and wedge shaped café provides a
unique identity for the scheme. These dynamic structures, together
with the provision of the adjacent anchor units will ensure people
are drawn from all directions.
The scheme provides much needed improvements and additional retail
accommodation with modern, appropriately sized units reflected by
the number of well known retailers taking occupation. The natural
change in levels across the site is used by DLG to maximum effect
providing basement servicing and vehicular circulation below the
ground floor.
Martin Cranage, Director at DLG Architects comments: “We are
delighted that Willow Place will be open to the public offering
fantastic high street stores. Willow Place has been built in a prime
location adjacent to the existing retail core, the primary road
network and the redevelopment site for the new Civic Centre at
Parkland Gateway, means the scheme will integrate and enhance Corby
Borough Council’s long term aspirations for the Town Centre and
surrounding districts.”
Via a substantial masterplan embracing shopping, housing and
transport, Corby Borough Council and Northhants Development Company
have committed to change not only Corby’s appearance, but its
demographics and regional ranking. It is predicted that Corby’s
catchment population will double from 50,000 to 100,000 by 2010.
