Over recent decades traffic engineers have had
more impact on the character and quality of the places where we live
than any architect, town planner or urban designer.
Now a traffic engineer from northern Holland has turned much of the
conventional wisdom of traffic engineering (and town planning and
urban design) on its head. Build roads that seem dangerous, Hans
Monderman says, and they’ll be safer. ‘Always treat drivers as human
beings – never as mindless zombies!’
Hans Monderman’s work has had a major influence in revising our
understanding of traffic in towns. His ideas are now beginning to be
applied in the UK. The result has been a great deal of controversy.
Hans Monderman will be speaking between 5pm and 7pm on Tuesday 13
November at City Hall, London. The event is being organised by the
Urban Design Group, Urban Design London and the GLA
