Miller Construction - Opens doors to collage pupils
Youngsters from Dumfries had a taste of the
construction industry when they visited the site of the
new Dumfries & Galloway College, for which Miller
Construction is the main contractor.
The P7 pupils from Locharbriggs Primary School – who
recently undertook building lessons using
specially-produced small bricks – were supplied with
hard-hats and child-sized high visibility vests for
their visit.
As well as getting a sneak preview of what could be
their future college – a £38million state-of-the-art
campus – they gained a real insight into work on a
construction site and careers in the industry.
Stephen O’Connell, Project Manager, Miller Construction,
said: “It was our pleasure to take these young people on
a tour of the site and it was great to see them showing
such enthusiasm.
“They had a chance to learn about all aspects of the
industry and took part in a variety of health and safety
games. Afterwards we invited them to take their
high-visibility vests home to wear going to and from
school, making them more visible in the dark winter
mornings and evenings.”
Miller Construction teamed up with Dumfries & Galloway
College to organise the event, which forms part of the
Government Skills for Work programme and the drive to
promote vocational skills in a bid to address Scotland’s
skills shortage. The visit, which included boys and
girls, also aimed to address Government targets to
encourage more women into construction.
Ian Beach, Vice Principal of Dumfries and Galloway
College, said: “We were delighted to welcome the pupils
along to the construction site to see the new campus
development taking shape, as well as giving them an
inside look at what a major construction project like
this involves. We hope that it encourages them to
consider the many career opportunities available in the
construction industry.”
The new campus, which will replace the existing Dumfries
& Galloway College, will span 4.3 hectares and will be
Scotland’s first multi-institutional campus, hosting not
only Dumfries & Galloway College but also the University
of Paisley,The Open University, the Scottish
Agricultural College and the University of Glasgow.
Catering for 6,000 students, it will feature the latest
technology in a modern and flexible learning space.
Stephen O’Connell added: “We are delighted to be the
main contractor for Dumfries & Galloway college and have
considerable expertise in the education sector,
delivering on time and within budget. We look forward to
its opening in August 2008.”
