Doig+Smith - Appointed to Convert Marischal Collage to HQ
Aberdeen City Council has appointed
quantity surveyors, Doig+Smith to turn city centre
landmark Marischal College into its corporate
headquarters.
The £80 m capped (50m construction costs) restoration
project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2010.
Marischal College and was commissioned in 1593 by George
Keith, Fourth Earl Marischal of Scotland and the famous
frontage was designed by Marshall Mackenzie and
Archibald Simpson and completed in 1906 in the heyday of
Aberdeen's granite industry. It is the second largest
granite building in the world, exceeded only by Spain's
Escorial, once the home of the Spanish monarchy. The
frontage is over 400 feet long, with an average height
of 80 feet.
The details of this significant and important project
for the city of Aberdeen include the retention of the
famous granite façade whilst transforming the internals
to Grade A listed building status.
Additional floors will be incorporated to increase the
overall square footage and maximise the floor plates.
And two college rooms (Senate Room and Senate Ante
Room)) are to be retained and renovated. A key objective
is to provide a modern working environment for over
1,000 personnel whilst preserving a key historic
building in Aberdeen.
Archaeological works are also anticipated as the works
progress on this historic site.
"Delivering to budget is our crucial role, so from now
until completion in December 2010, we will be using our
challenge ethos and commercial process to ensure that we
deliver maximum value for money as well as cost
predictability through all stages," said Ian Jamieson,
Partner, Doig+Smith.
Doig+Smith is currently also working on the Aberdeen
Fisheries Research Services project and at Aberdeen
Airport for BAA having recently delivered QS services
for the completion of the Harbour Operations Centre.
