British Gypsum - Makes life better for Leeds homeless
More of Leeds’ most underprivileged residents can look
forward to a better life, thanks in part to British
Gypsum plasters and plasterboards, donated towards the
refurbishment of St George’s Crypt Faith Lodge Centre.
More than 1500m2 of Gyproc Wallboard and SoundBloc
acoustic plasterboard were supplied to line ceilings and
separating walls, whilst external walls benefited from a
lining of special Gyproc ThermaLine thermal laminates,
which will improve comfort and help to reduce heating
bills in the refurbished Centre. Internal finishes were
achieved using more than 8.5 tonnes of Thistle plasters
and accessories.
The British Gypsum products, valued in excess of
£10,000, were supplied to Christian Charity, St George’s
Crypt, though the building industry sponsored charity,
CRASH, of which British Gypsum is a patron.
Martin Patterson of St George’s Crypt said “The project
has been a great success, achieving a real
transformation for the building, and the residents. The
building can now accommodate almost double the number of
residents, who benefit not only from the new facilities,
but from a skills training programme that we have been
able to set up thanks to the flexibility offered by the
new layout.”
British Gypsum Managing Director, Mike Chaldecott, is
delighted with what has been achieved at Faith Lodge,
“As a long term supporter of CRASH, we regularly provide
technical support, product and financial help for the
charity’s homelessness projects - this is a another
great example of what can be achieved when companies and
charities work in partnership”, he said.
The new hostel will provide full time accommodation and
support for 15 middle aged men, who typically have been
sleeping rough or have spent time in and out of short
stay hostels, and who have had problems with alcohol
misuse. They will now each have their own bedrooms and
shared lounge, games room and dining room, and will
enjoy 24-hour support and three hot cooked meals a day.
