Faber Maunsell - Faber Maunsell wins Major Environmental Award
Faber Maunsell has won the Best Practice Award at the British
Construction Industry Awards 2007 to add to the 36 awards that the
company and its projects have won so far this year.
The company won the award for its Witham Phase 2/3 Contract, which
was a £12million flood alleviation scheme for the Environment
Agency. Faber Maunsell has been working on the scheme since 1996
taking the project from Strategy Stage through feasibility and
detailed design culminating in construction over 2001-2006 - the
maintenance period ends in 2008. The construction contract provided
the opportunity to work as a team alongside the Environment Agency
and the contractor, May Gurney Construction.
The BCIA Best Practice Award is for projects which involve processes
adopted to understand and meet client needs: support team working
throughout; and maintain continuous improvement. Only the best of
projects in these areas are shortlisted.”
Speaking after the Awards Ceremony in London, billed as the
Industry’s Oscars, Andy Yarde, Project Director, said: “The award
was in recognition of a project that demonstrated true teamwork,
innovative engineering solutions and numerous examples of best
practice.
Graham Howells, Managing Director of Faber Maunsell’s Environment
Division, said: “Winning this award is fantastic News for our
Environment Division and follows on from the news that we are now to
work on a massive extension of Wallasea Wetlands, our Project of the
Year last year, to provide 736 hectares of wetlands for birds and
wildlife.”
Andy Yarde was joined at the Awards Ceremony by Faber Maunsell’s
Environmental Manager for the project Nigel Pilkington and Peter
Senior who led the company’s site based team throughout the five
year construction period.
Another Faber Maunsell project, Cleveleys Coast Protection Phase 2
received a high commendation for the same award. This £11.2 million
job has transformed a dated and largely dilapidated l920s seafront
promenade that still protects the town from the sea on an exposed
length of coastline. The use of precast concrete, high— strength
abrasion-resistant units meant that a high- quality product could be
delivered to site with less waste and greater safety.
