Dawn Construction, one of Scotland’s leading
construction firms, was recently recognised through a
‘Commendation’ from Dundee Civic Trust following the
construction of the Borders Bookshop building on East
Dock Street, formerly the Gourlay Engine Works.
Jim Johnstone, Divisional Manager, attended the awards
ceremony at the Dundee Arts Society in Roseangle to pick
up the awards on behalf of the business who relocated
the historic listed building that Borders bookstore now
occupies.
The project, which took 48 weeks to complete in total,
comprised the delicate operation of relocating an 11,500
sqft Listed Building, including the careful removal of
the roof trusses and their restoration for re-use;
removal of the cast iron columns and beams and the high
level gantry crane and rails, all of which were
reconditioned for use within the new structure.
The construction of the new unit included 28 reinforced
concrete columns 3m girth and 10m high tied together by
rendered blockwork, all in line with the advice and
expectations of Dundee City Council and Historic
Scotland.
The project, with a construction value of £7.2million,
was ‘commended’ by the Dundee Civic Trust due to its
emphasis on preservation and urban heritage of Dundee as
a city. It was also highlighted as a contender for the
award due to its impeccable standard of design in
architecture.
Jim commented: “I was delighted to receive this very
prestigious award from the Dundee Civic Trust. The Trust
does not give away awards lightly and looks at hundreds
of buildings across the city before deciding who should
receive the year’s award.
“The project at East Dock Retail Park was very unique
but our highly skilled people managed the job with great
precision and met all expectations stated by the client
and on time – buildings such as these are rare and are a
real asset to the city of Dundee.
“I would like to thank all at the Trust for their
recognition and wish them continued success of
‘encouraging the best’.”
Chairman of Dundee Civic Trust, Jack Searle was at the
awards ceremony to present Jim with the award. He added:
“It is a real honour to present Dawn Construction with
the Trusts’ annual Commendation award. The Borders
building is an outstanding contribution to the city and
its move and restoration is a really positive feature to
the area.
“Each year we look at a host of buildings for the
Commendation award but this year, there was none more
deserving than the building at East Dock – I would like
to thank Dawn Construction for their contribution to the
city of Dundee and congratulate them on their
achievement.”
The Dundee Civic Trust is a voluntary body and
charitable trust set up in 1973 aimed at the
preservation and promotion of the urban heritage of the
City and its neighbourhood to encourage the best
standard of design in architecture and town planning for
new developments.
