Bradford City Council push for a park

Bradford is celebrating following the announcement that its £24.5m Lottery bid to create a stunning ‘Park at the Heart’ of the city is still in the running to receive a grant from the Big Lottery Fund’s Living Landmark’s programme.

The park was one of 23 schemes from across the country to reach the final shortlist last year. Now the Living Landmark’s committee have confirmed that Bradford’s scheme is one of just a few that will be looked at in greater detail to decide who gets a share of the Living Landmarks funding.

A delegation of Big Lottery Fund committee members, which will make the final judgement, will visit the city for the first time later this month.

The full committee panel, which includes members with experience in architecture, regeneration and the environment, will then invite the Bradford team leading the bid to give a final presentation of the scheme in London. The committee will make a decision on the projects to be awarded grants in November.

Spearheaded by Bradford City Council and Bradford Centre Regeneration, the ten acre park has received overwhelming support from over 31,000 people across the region. It will create a unique, flexible space and provide an eye-catching area for community events and concerts which can be used throughout the year.

It will also feature a mirror pool which will form the civic centrepiece and include infrastructure to hold major public events beside the Grade-I listed City Hall, along with children’s play areas, quiet spaces for reflection, and bars, cafes and restaurants.

Councillor Andrew Mallinson, Head of the District’s Regeneration, said: “This is tremendous news. This is a huge step forward in the bid to create a truly unique space for everyone in the city to enjoy and benefit from.

“The number of residents from across the district who have shown their support for the scheme and backed the city’s bid has been overwhelming. We couldn’t have reached this stage without their support and I would like to thank everyone for the part they have played in helping us to move towards making this scheme become a reality.

“The decision to shortlist this ambitious scheme is testament to its stunning design, which will bring a world-class park to Bradford and I look forward to hearing the final result in November.”

Maud Marshall, Chief Executive of Bradford Centre Regeneration, said: “The park will revitalise the city centre, and is an exciting opportunity to change the face of Bradford. It has been designed to bring significant jobs and investment and will act as a catalyst for growth. It will attract both visitors and residents to the core of the city and will have a transformational effect on both the centre and the wider district.”
