MONTREAL, Sept. 20, 2007 – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) honored Carrier Corp. yesterday with its coveted
Best-of-the-Best Stratospheric Ozone Protection award in recognition
of the company’s achievements in helping restore the Earth’s
protective ozone layer. Carrier is a unit of United Technologies
Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
“We are truly honored that EPA is recognizing Carrier’s
environmental leadership with such a prestigious award,” said John
Mandyck, Carrier’s vice president of government and international
relations, who accepted the award during ceremonies last night in
Montreal.
The awards presentation coincided with the 20th anniversary of the
United Nations Montreal Protocol, which calls for a global
elimination of ozone depleting substances such as chlorofluorcarbons
(CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) used in air-conditioning
and refrigeration products.
"Environmental leading companies like Carrier demonstrate that
global environmental protection can go hand in hand with economic
growth,” said Bob Meyers, principal deputy assistant administrator
for EPA's Office of Air and Radiation.
Geraud Darnis, president of Carrier Corp., said, “Carrier has been
an industry leader in environmental stewardship for decades. This
award is yet another testament to our ability to be an environmental
champion.”
In 1994, Carrier became the first company in the industry to
phase-out CFCs from air-conditioning systems worldwide -- two years
ahead of requirements in the U.S. and 16 years ahead of mandates in
developing countries.
In 1996, Carrier was first to offer non-ozone depleting commercial
and residential systems. Since then, Carrier has sold more than 3
million non-ozone depleting Puron® residential systems in North
America.

In 2005, Carrier introduced the Evergreen® 23XRV variable speed
screw chiller using non-ozone depleting HFC-134a refrigerant. This
commercial product was a first by Carrier, employing new technology
to achieve world-class energy efficiency with zero compromise on
ozone protection.
Carrier’s environmental leadership extends beyond developing
innovative products designed for quality, reliability and the
environment to the way those products are manufactured. Since 1997,
Carrier has doubled in size with no increase in energy consumption.
“Green products start with how they’re made in the first place,”
said Mandyck.
EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson said, “By embracing cooperation
over confrontation, EPA and our vital partners like Carrier are
continuing to create a better tomorrow by protecting the Earth's
atmosphere today. We at EPA join the global community in celebrating
the anniversary of the Montreal Protocol – a shining example of how
human ingenuity, leadership and determination can create a
healthier, better world.”
Best-of-the-Best award nominees were evaluated by the federal
Environmental Protection Agency staff and judged by an international
panel representing industry, government, and non-governmental
organizations.
“The 2007 Best-of-the-Best Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award
winners have demonstrated sustained commitment to protection of our
global environment," added Meyers.
Olympic success
The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games (BOCOG) of the 2008
Olympics has received the United Nations Montreal Protocol Public
Awareness Award, which recognizes their work in raising awareness
about ozone depletion. In bidding for the right to host the Olympic
Games, BOCOG promised to eliminate the use of ozone-depleting
substances six years prior to the Montreal Protocol’s target date of
2010 and have the “greenest” Olympics. To achieve this goal,
developers needed energy efficient and environmentally sound
products to support their building and infrastructure development
projects. Carrier’s expertise in providing innovative “green”
products enabled it to capture 70 percent of all HVAC contracts
awarded.
“We’re proud to have played an important role in helping China make
the Beijing Games the ‘greenest' Olympics,’” said Kelly Romano,
president of Carrier Building Systems and Services.

With Carrier’s success in supplying energy-efficient HVAC products
for the 2008 Olympic Games, the company is well positioned to offer
similar solutions and services to developers of the 2012 Olympic
Games in London.
Carrier’s early commercialization of non ozone-depleting technology
has enabled many countries, including those in Europe, to accelerate
the phase-out of HCFCs, well ahead of their Montreal Protocol
targets.
