HRH The Princess Royal today unveils the
spectacularly revamped Doncaster Racecourse, home to the world's
oldest Classic horserace, the St Leger. ISG has completely
transformed the 300 year old historic site over a period of 21
months, creating one of the most impressive facilities in the
UK.
Client Arena Leisure originally tendered the racecourse as a
refurbishment project. However, after considerable exploration
it became apparent that the grandstand, which is the major
component of the racecourse, would be more effective for modern
use if completely rebuilt.
ISG's involvement in Doncaster racecourse comprises:
· Complete demolition and rebuild of the 60s-built
grandstand to make way for a state-of-the-art, steel-framed
grandstand. Over 50,000 tonnes of steel and 100,000 tonnes of
concrete were used for the new five-tier grandstand.
· The old stable block has been knocked down and replaced
by a new complex housing 154 stables, a weighing room facility,
saddling boxed and a pre-parade ring. Ancillary accommodation
will contain veterinary facilities and accommodation for jockeys
and stable staff.
· Fit out of all third-party retailers incorporating all
the restaurants, bars and private boxes throughout the
grandstand.
Timely completion of the racecourse was crucial as Doncaster's
racing calendar is fixed long in advance. ISG has successfully
completed the project on time and on budget ? no mean feat given
the impact of the July 2007 floods which resulted in two thirds
of the project's 500-strong workforce being unable to get to the
site and several key contractors completely out of action.
Craig Tatton, Managing Director of ISG's regional business,
says;
"A key factor in being selected by Arena Leisure was ISG's
ability to deliver the project from base build through to the
final fit out and to validate the cost plan quickly and
underwrite these costs through the supply chain. Understanding
the unique needs of the client was also paramount which is why
ISG involved key personnel from other major UK racecourses to
understand the complexities of issues within the racing
environment.
"ISG is immensely proud to be proud of its involvement in what
is now one of the most impressive racecourses in the country."
