Sikkens and Crown Trade products have been used in a comprehensive project to refurbish a Louisiana style paddle steamer which houses an Old Orleans Restaurant, based on a Thurrock lakeside. Specialist paint products were required for the project to protect against the testing conditions facing the surfaces from the weather, the marine location and the high numbers of visitors.

The owners, Regents Inns, tasked Nottinghamshire contractors, Project MC (UK) Ltd with the refurbishment which included a complete restyling both of interior and exterior areas in addition to the major repainting programme. Sikkens Rubbol Satura colours were used externally to achieve a rich, opaque satin finish. Sikkens Rubbol Satura coatings have demonstrated a significant reduction in the effects of chalking following long periods of exposure – an issue which can be associated with external satin finishes.

Internally, Crown Trade Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt emulsion was applied, for its resistance to wear and tear and ease of keeping surfaces clean. Specifically created for high traffic areas, the durable finish of Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt provides a surface that has been designed to stand repetitive cleaning and excellent stain resistance. Carefully balanced colour schemes were created, from over 3,500 shades available, to achieve an authentic Louisianna look for the floating restaurant.

Steve Crayfourd, of Project MC (UK) Ltd, explained the choice of paint products: “We chose Akzo Nobel because of their team’s extensive knowledge of finishes, which was particularly important with this project due to the specialist nature of our requirements. We chose the Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt in particular for its hard-wearing qualities and the ease with which surfaces can be kept clean.”

The 10-week project involved the creation of new toilet facilities, flooring, stairwells, seating, and food and bar areas. Outside, previously unused roof space was converted into an open terrace and new lighting has been added inside and out.
