Carrier Air Conditioning - Westfield Derby cooled by 2.5MW of ‘value-engineered’ Carrier systems with chillers and air handling units

Following Westfield Derby’s £340 million redevelopment, integrated air conditioning systems from Carrier, including Aquasnap Puron R410A chillers and Airovision air handling units, are providing the cooling for the vast public circulation spaces, as well as ventilation for the food concept ‘Eat Central’.

Between them the six Carrier chillers have a combined cooling capacity of 2.5MW and include factory-fitted integral hydronic packs. The nine Carrier air handling units with volumes between 10.5 and 14.2 m3/sec were specifically factory-tested to prove that they are qualified for the job.

Their design was complex with gas heaters, cooling coils, run around coils, and recessed bulkheads to house pump packs and controls. The contract details included the provision of interconnecting chilled water and run around coil pipework. This was installed locally by experienced Carrier Dealer – Arcade.

The whole installation was value engineered to suit the on-site conditions and to fit the space available, with the system sized to avoid the need for separate buffer tanks. Pumps were therefore sited within the chiller footprint and the ahu bulkhead design.

Opening on 9th October, Westfield Derby will introduce one million sq ft (100,000 sq m) of retail, food and lifestyle space. Introducing over 100 local, regional and national stores Westfield Derby will provide a vibrant mix of fashion, home wares and leisure, an 800 seat food concept and 3,700 car parking spaces. 2,850 permanent jobs will be provided on completion, in addition to the 1,700 construction jobs generated during construction. A12-screen, 70,000 sq ft (6,500 sq m) Cinema de Lux, the first in the UK, is scheduled to open during early 2008.
