Connection - Demonstrates innovation in new Eco-Chrome painting technique

UK furniture designer and manufacturer Connection has introduced an important new innovation - a new Eco-chrome painting technique. Looking at all areas of its business to go ‘greener’, Connection identified chrome plating as a key issue.

Eco-chrome is a durable multi-layered powder coat finish that looks like bright chrome plating but doesn’t have the same impact on the environment as the usual chroming process. It creates an attractive and appealing end result. Connection aim to use the technique across the entire collection by 2008. Traditional chrome plating is an environmentally hazardous process which may be subject to future changes in EU legislation.

This new development is part of a series of key initiatives by Connection in terms of sustainable design. In 2006, Connection introduced the EcoStartTM task chair, the UK’s first carbon neutral office chair. This was designed focusing on its environmental cost, through a ‘life cycle assessment.’ The analysis took into account a product’s materials, manufacture, transport, use and disposal at each stage of its development.

The EcoStartTM chair itself is 98% recyclable by weight and 52% of the materials used in its production are recycled. It has been made with interchangeable upholstery pads which encourage a longer life by enabling on-site refurbishment.

Although the chair has been developed with the well-being of the environment in mind, Connection’s high standards of design have not been compromised. As with all chairs within Connection’s ranges, the greatest attention has been paid to ensuring high levels of ergonomics and user comfort.

Connection’s collection of furniture stems from the philosophy of connecting and creating productive spaces. Its approach is to provide inspirational commercial products for interiors, and demonstrate that good design needn’t be expensive.

“Connection’s approach is to continually invest in great design and approaches, not only creating great looking products but also to constantly improve the manufacturing process, and bring the associated benefits to our customers,” says Jonathan Hill, Managing Director.
