The Wood Protection Association - FirePRO listed by WPA
The Wood Protection Association (WPA)
has issued an update to their fire retardants
information sheet and manual both of which now include
FirePRO from Osmose.
FirePRO is a WPA Type HR (Humidity Resistant)
impregnation flame retardant suitable for interior and
protected exterior situations where wood and wood-based
board materials need their reaction to fire rating
upgraded to UK Class 1 or ‘O’ or Euroclass B or C.
FirePRO joins Arch Timber Protection product Dricon as
the only two type HR products listed by the WPA.
Further details on products listed by the WPA can be
obtained from suppliers’ websites. Web address details
are available from the WPA website at
www.wood-protection.org under ‘Find a Member’.
Incorporating UK and European fire testing standards,
the manual includes five model specifications designed
to cover most uses for solid timber and panel products
where protection against fire is required. Flame
retardant product types are: Type DI (dry interior), HR
(humidity resistant) and LR (leach resistant). These
product types and the model specifications can only be
used in relation to products listed in the Manual.
Dr Chris Coggins Director of the WPA said, ‘Information
Sheet FR1 gives a brief introduction to flame retardant
products and their specification and acts as an
introduction to the manual. Both documents are available
to industry professionals and WPA members as free
downloads from our website at www.wood-protection.org or
can be ordered on CD. We are certain that the Manual
will prove invaluable to users and specifiers of flame
retardant products.
It is important for specifiers and users of flame
retardant treated wood and wood-based materials to
realise that for these safety-critical products it is
vital to ask for and get certificates supporting the
performance claims of such products. These should be
specific for the timber species or board type and
thickness to be used. They should be no more than five
years old and be issued by a recognised testing
institution. False or altered certificates are far from
unknown in the UK market and, if there is any doubt over
the authenticity of a certificate, they can be checked
by calling the testing body named. Specifiers can be
confident in choosing a flame retardant product from
among those listed in the WPA manual. Where a listed
product also meets the WPA Approval Scheme requirements,
certificated performance information is also to be found
in the manual’.
