Aico - Remote control technology will help save lives in a fire says Aico

Many of the reasons why mains powered smoke alarms fail to operate in a fire can now be safely and economically prevented by using Aico's unique Remote Control technology, claims the company.

Fire Statistics, United Kingdom 2005 (recently issued by the Department for Communities and Local Government) states that 2,287 mains powered alarms failed to operate. Aico - the UK's leading provider of mains powered smoke alarms - believes that problems with accessing ceiling mounted alarms has led to alarms being disabled and rarely tested, hence this figure, which is the highest in five years.

Aico's solution has been to introduce a unique new Remote Control function on all of its bestselling Ei160 series smoke and heat alarm units free of charge. This allows users to perform Locate, Hush, Test and Mains Check functions from the new Alarm Control Switch which can be positioned on the wall for safe and convenient access, similar to a light switch. Aico's new Remote Control technology can be used both with conventional hard-wired interconnect systems and with the company's own unique RadioLINK wireless interconnect system.

"Ceiling mounted alarms are difficult and even dangerous for residents to reach - especially the elderly or frail" points out Neil Perdell, Technical Product Manager of Aico. "This means that any nuisance alarm may be dealt with by disabling the unit. It also means that people are very reluctant to climb up to perform a regular test of their smoke alarms. Both of these problems can be eliminated very simply and economically now.

"With Aico Remote Control technology, users can now safely test and hush their alarms without having to reach for the ceiling. We think this will mean far greater user compliance and far less disabling of alarms".
