SEEDA - Green Paper on housing
The South East England Development
Agency (SEEDA) welcomes the initiative of the Government
in bringing together all the Growth Points for housing
contained within today’s Green Paper on housing from the
Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).
This paper outlines how the Government intends to reach
the Prime Minister’s target of three million new homes
by 2020, and offers strong practical direction to Local
Authorities and their partners in taking forward the
housing strategy for the Region.
SEEDA has worked alongside the Regional Assembly to
emphasise the importance of infrastructure to support
new homes and to identify new mechanisms for providing
it. This is crucial both to release development
opportunities which are held up despite having planning
permission and to support the social and environmental
fabric of sustainable communities. The Regional Economic
Strategy (RES) is very clear that quality of life and
environmental sustainability are essential to the future
economic prosperity of the South East.
SEEDA Chief Executive Pam Alexander says: “It is vitally
important that we achieve a balance between the
provision of affordable and sustainable housing in the
South East which will support the economic growth
ambitions for the Region, and the absolute necessity to
ensure that all housing is built in areas that can
sustain the extra development in a socially supportive
and environmentally responsible way. We welcome the
announcement today of the identification of growth
points throughout the region which will allow us to
focus partnership resources in achieving the best
outcomes for the economy, communities and the
environment."
