SAS International - Stewart House gets makeover and improved lighting performance with SAS FT Metal Ceilings

During the refurbishment of the University of London Stewart House building, leading architectural practice Building Design Partnership (BDP) chose to specify metal ceilings from SAS International which featured its brand new semi-matt, fine textured paint finish SAS FT.
Specified within the office, teaching, meeting and corridor spaces the SAS FT 6% gloss metal ceiling tiles minimise the creation of ‘hotspots’ from indirect light sources, an issue common with up-lighting. The finish also helps to control glare and uncontrolled light reflection, particularly with high levels of natural light.
Designed with a semi-matt texture, the finish improves lighting performance across the ceiling plane. “The finished installation of SAS FT metal ceilings works well in lighting terms and helps create the bright modern and pleasant working environment required by the University,” commented Ninian Adair, Associate Interior Designer at BDP.
To meet the required acoustic performance a barely visible ultra micro perforation pattern was specified for the tiles. In conjunction with the low-gloss appearance of the SAS FT finish, this perforation pattern is in keeping with the minimal and uniform look desired by the architect.
The fine textured finish, which is visually similar to emulsioned plasterboard, has all the performance characteristics you would expect from a suspended metal ceiling. The durable polyester powder coated finish has an exceptional life span with minimal maintenance costs and metal ceilings are 100% recyclable at the end of life.
Stewart House was purpose-built as office accommodation in the early 1980’s and the recent refurbishment was undertaken when the University regained possession in 2005. Adjoining the listed Senate House on the Russell Square side, Stewart House was refurbished as part of the major replanning of the Senate House/Stewart House complex.
