HLM Architects - designed South West Yorkshire Mental Health unit completes

South West Yorkshire Mental Health NHS Trust’s, £5.7 million enhanced medium-secure Learning Disability Unit at Newton Lodge, Fieldhead Hospital in Wakefield has been completed. The scheme, procured via P21, was designed by HLM Architects and Interserve Health was the Principal Supply Chain Partner for the development.
The new, 1,778 sq m unit is attached to the existing Medium Secure facilities at Newton Lodge. It provides a 7-bed assessment and treatment ward, a 13-bed continuing care ward, a dedicated therapy and education area as well as offices and staff accommodation.
The design of the assessment and treatment ward respects the privacy and needs of those that require intensive therapy. Maximum daylight is delivered to all the day spaces through traditional windows, glazed screens and numerous roof lights. All of the bedrooms have en-suite facilities, and the area is spacious and well-provided with natural light, a theme which continues throughout the unit. The 13-bed continuing care ward provides ‘slow stream’ rehabilitation and, again, all bedrooms are en-suite.
The two wards are conjoined and designed so the capacity of each ward can be expanded or contracted depending on clinical need. This design feature will also allow a suite of rooms to be isolated to provide an extra high quality intensive care area for one individual without impinging on the quality of care given to other patients.
The therapy and education area accommodates many activities which are currently provided at ward level, but enables them to be undertaken in more appropriate surroundings. As dedicated space, any expansion in bed numbers will not have a detrimental effect on the existing day service provision.
The office and staff facilities provide accommodation for staff close to the clinical area as well as good quality rest facilities away from the clinical area.
