Sinter Studio - Sinter Studio satisfies a hunger for More-ish
tiles
Sinter Studio ,a Manchester based tile design agency,
is bringing traditionally handmade Spanish floor tiles
noted for their beautiful colours to the UK market. The
tiles made by the same family since 1913 are known as
cement encaustic and combine cool elegance with the
charm of bygone days.
Albert Marti whose grandfather trained in Gaudi ’s
workshop and founded the business in 1913 says: “In the
last twenty years we have restored the old presses and
reclaimed the moulds that were used in old Modernista
designs. We are very pleased to see our tiles and design
tradition followed in the UK
To make the tiles, the company Mosaic Marti use brass
moulds to form the design into which coloured cements
are poured to different section at a depth of half a
centimetre. This form the tile's top layer and while the
cement is still fluid, the mould is removed so the
different colours can collide, forming the design. The
craftsman sprinkles one and a half centimetres of a dry
cement mixture which forms the body of the tile and then
applies 4,000 pounds of hydraulic pressure to draw
moisture from the coloured cement through the dry
backing.
The result is a solid, durable piece that becomes more
polished as it wears. Thanks to its depth of pigment,
the tile can sustain surface chips and still retain its
colour. This environmentally friendly process
strengthens the lively character of the tiles and you
can still find these tiles in many European castles,
churches and country estates.
