Fläkt Woods - Tracked transit system fans and inverters at T5 Heathrow

Fläkt Woods has supplied six 1.6m diameter, truly reversible Axial Flow fans, fitted with energy saving inverters, for the Tracked Transit System (TTS) at T5 Heathrow working for Mott MacDonald on behalf of BAA.
The latest range of Fläkt Woods inverters offer real technological innovation. Installing a matched variable speed drive allows sensitive controllability of fan speed, enabling fans to run at their optimum speeds to meet the changing system requirements, thus offering the potential of considerable energy savings at part load.
Fans will be used for general ventilation of the tunnel on a daily basis, and are capable of operating for 1 hour at temperatures of 250°, should they need to run in a fire scenario. The inverters allow the system to run at maximum performance. By only running the fans to meet demand they save considerable money and energy over conventional damper control.
In a fire situation, the system has very sophisticated computer model that runs each of the fans in either direction to control the smoke and ensure the safe evacuation of passengers from the tunnel.
Inverter and fan specialists from Fläkt Woods worked very closely with the team at T5 to ensure the ventilation system sacrificed nothing in its safety critical role, whilst still being able to perform its daily operation.
The TTS is a light rail system providing an underground link between the various terminal buildings which make up T5. When it opens in March 2008, the trains will depart from the stations through 2 parallel tunnels every 90 seconds with a journey time of 45 seconds.
Projects like this highlight Flakt Woods as a leading supplier of integrated fan and inverter solutions to large schemes.
