Audley - Safety is older people's number one priority
The need to feel safe in a secure environment is the
number one reason why older people in the UK choose to
live in retirement communities according to sales
research.
The concept of retirement villages is huge in America
with more than a million people choosing to live in
communities designed for enhanced retirement. Now the
idea is taking off here with retirement communities
being opened across the country.
Figures from Audley, the company which pioneered
retirement living in the UK, show the top five reasons
for buying an apartment are:
• Need to feel safe
• Freedom to enjoy life
• Companionship
• Knowing there is help when you need it and
independence when you don’t
“There is a growing concern amongst older people about
crime and whether that is based on a real or perceived
threat the effect is just the same,” explained Nick
Sanderson, CEO of Raven Audley Court.
“As people get older the need to feel safer in their
homes grows and they tell us this is the main reason why
they look at moving into a retirement community such as
ours.
Our residents really appreciate not having to set
burglar alarms or worry about the possibility of
break-ins whilst they are out enjoying their new
freedom.”
A typical retirement community consists of bungalows and
two-bed-roomed apartments set in the grounds of a
heritage building with bar, restaurant and leisure
facilities such as a swimming pool.
There is 24 hour support staff available when needed and
residents have personal alarms and other security
features.
