Pilkington Building Products - Pilkington set the standard for window energy ratings

Pilkington is taking the evolution of Pilkington K GlassTM into the energy-saving era with the launch of Pilkington energiKareTM - the most exciting development in glazing energy efficiency in the last 15 years. Pilkington energiKare™ is a new insulating glass unit (IGU) which helps to meet the requirements of the Energy Saving Trust’s Energy Saving Recommended scheme. In conjunction with most framing materials it will achieve a Window Energy Rating of at least C and easily exceed the requirements for compliance with Part L of the building regulations.
Pilkington energiKareTM is made normally up of 4mm Pilkington K GlassTM and 4mm Pilkington OptiwhiteTM and must be filled with argon gas, conforming to EN1279 Part 3. When combined using a standard aluminium spacer bar, rather than a more expensive warm edge spacer, it offers an easy to process, cost effective product that is readily available throughout the UK. What’s more, with no significant process change for processors, Pilkington energiKareTM IGUs help window fabricators and installers achieve the inspirational band C rating, hassle free.
This latest initiative from Pilkington enables homeowners to have windows that are endorsed by Pilkington and accredited by the Energy Saving Trust, helping them to save energy and reduce the cost of their heating bills whilst doing their bit for the environment.
Frances Galvanoni, spokesperson for the Energy Saving Trust, said: “Over a quarter of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions, some 153 million tonnes each year, are generated from the energy we use in our homes. It’s crucial that manufacturers push the boundaries when it comes to developing energy saving products which will help us to reduce the amount of energy we waste in our homes. By installing double glazed windows, like those that will incorporate Pilkington energiKareTM, homeowners can reduce the amount of energy they use by 20 per cent and cut their fuel bill by around £80-£100 each year. A clear benefit to the planet and our pockets.”
David Stoker, Commercial Director, Pilkington Building Products – UK, said: “For window installers, Pilkington energiKareTM is the product to give product differentiation and boost sales and profit. It is guaranteed to help achieve a Window Energy Rating of at least a C, therefore appealing to environmentally conscious homeowners.”
The new IGU incorporates Pilkington K Glass™, the leading low emissivity glass in the UK and Ireland which is widely recognised by homeowners, and Pilkington Optiwhite™, the specialist ultra clear glass which enables more heat from the sun to be captured and used in the home. Pilkington K Glass™ and Pilkington Optiwhite™ are both standard products so are available off the shelf and in a range of sizes across the UK.
The Pilkington energiKare™ IGU will be available via the Pilkington processor network and also from IGU processor partners who are eligible to carry exactly the same branding. In addition, partner window companies will be able to leverage the Pilkington energiKareTM brand in their own promotions.
David concludes: “As well as the guarantee of a high quality product, customers will also benefit from the stamp of approval of the Pilkington energiKareTM label on every unit and the support of a substantial national marketing campaign. We will also provide guidance on how to get windows rated with the BFRC and how Energy Saving Recommended status from the Energy Saving Trust can be achieved.”
