Mouchel Parkman - New design for a historic market place in
Wiltshire
Mouchel Parkman has been commissioned by West
Wiltshire District Council to produce a design-led
solution for the enhancement of Market Place in
Westbury.
The Market Place is in a prominent location within the
town centre and is surrounded by a number of listed
buildings from the 18th and 19th century.
The most important of which is the Town Hall which is
the focal point of the Market Place and dates back to
around 1815. The location also features views to the
White Horse hill carving and the church tower.
Mouchel Parkman is providing project management, urban
design and traffic engineering advice for the project.
The design team is developing solutions to increase
pedestrian access and improve links to the rest of the
town centre. The aim is to return the space as an area
which prioritises pedestrian uses.
This also involves reducing the visual and physical
dominance of the vehicles in the Market Place while
retaining car parking and loading which are essential to
businesses in the square.
Mouchel Parkman is working with West Wiltshire District
Council and local stakeholders within the framework of
the Vision for Westbury to enhance the commercial
viability and attractiveness of the space while also
creating a multi-use space for events, festivals and
markets.
