Kingspan Controlled Environments - Raising the bar with Kingspan
Controlled Environments
Mechanical handling techniques cut time and improve
efficiency on site
As the saying goes 'time is of the essence', and on the
construction site efficiency is key to finishing a job
on time. Kingspan Controlled Environments has been
leading the way in this field and has developed
relationships with specialist mechanical handling
companies to develop new and simple methods of
construction in a number of key environments.
Kingspan Controlled Environments is the UK's largest
manufacturer and supplier of LPCB Insurer Approved PIR (Polyisocyanurate)
cored composite panel systems for hygiene-safe and
temperature controlled building applications. The panels
can be used in temperatures as low as -40°C and are
ideal for the construction of internal and external
walls, ceilings and roofs in food storage and other
temperature controlled environments.
Mechanical handling facilitates the use and easy
installation of Kingspan Controlled Environments
products. This also offers important Health and Safety
benefits on site. Specialist contractors O Turner
Insulation Ltd have been working with Kingspan
Controlled Environments panels and harnessing the
benefits of improved mechanical handling. O. Turner
Insulation Ltd utilised Oktopus lifting equipment on a
new development for a large supermarket chain.
This large-scale project incorporated chill, cold and
ambient stores. The cold store roof was 7500m² and was
installed in three weeks. The external wall panels for
the cold store measured up to 18m long and required
specialist handling. The build of the vertical walls by
the contractors was assisted using Oktopus equipment, in
the form of a suction lifting machine, to carefully
raise the Kingspan Controlled Environment panel packs.
This provided for a speedy installation and for a safe
working environment.
O. Turner Insulation Ltd Operations Director, John Tilby,
said: "As a company we have been installing external
panels for quite a number of years, and have always felt
that using mechanical handling devices is the safest and
quickest method.”
“We have worked with Kingspan Controlled Environments
and its Envirocare Technical Services Team on various
projects which involve the installation of large
external PIR insulation panels. Using mechanical
handling devices has greatly increased on site
productivity, as well as ensuring the Kingspan product
is installed safely."
The benefits of mechanical handling are therefore
numerous. Speed of installation can offer significant
time savings, allowing contractors to increase
productivity. In addition, using mechanical handling
techniques also ensures full compliance with Health and
Safety due to the reduction of manual handling on site.
Furthermore, when handling long length panels the
installation in one panel length is an option, thus
ensuring greater integrity and increased aesthetic
appeal.
Oktopus UK Sales & Marketing Manager, Arran Gould, says:
"Mechanical handling is the way forward, especially now
that sites in the UK become more restricted in terms of
access and composite panels are getting heavier due to
increased demand for improved insulation properties.”
“The Oktopus range of suction lifting machines have been
used throughout the UK and Europe for 10 years now and
the construction industry is really catching onto the
benefits, including reduced labour costs and increased
productivity. The longer the panel, the more square
metres can be installed per hour.”
“To meet the demand we have introduced a range of
mechanical handling solutions to complement our range of
vacuum lifting machines to solve all site problems."
In addition to Oktopus, Kera (UK) and 4 Cladding
Services also provide mechanical handling devices
suitable for handling Kingspan Controlled Environments
panels.
