ISG Jackson Special Projects -Outdoor activities centre nets ISG Jackson its second award

ISG Jackson Special Projects is celebrating scooping a second award for its innovative Outdoor Activities Centre project at Whitlingham Country Park, Norwich. The centre has secured a Commendation at the 2007 Design Awards for New Buildings, run by the Norwich Society, which the contractor has now added to the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Built in Quality award it won at the end of last year.
Snell Associates, the architect for the scheme, designed a community facility for Norfolk County Council that is both practical and highly innovative, and which has been described as exquisite and perfectly designed for its location. The £1.6 million development is situated on the banks of the Whitlingham Great Broad, and comprises eight cabins arranged in a semi-circle, clad in marine-grade plywood, with a large fabric canopy structure providing a highly flexible central all weather area.
Innovation surrounds every aspect of the new centre, from the use of cutting edge building processes, such as screw anchor piling techniques to minimise environmental disruption during the ground works phase of the project, through to the specification of the off-site manufactured cabins and the unusual design of the tensile fabric canopy. The widely acclaimed Outdoor Activities Centre is now the main outdoor education centre for Norfolk County Council and attracts children, young people and adults from across the county for a range of activities including canoeing, sailing and windsurfing.
Michael Manning, construction director for ISG Jackson Special Projects, commented: "The Whitlingham scheme has proved a uniquely demanding project, incorporating a raft of innovative ideas and concepts, the results of which have produced an outstanding facility. This latest industry accolade acknowledges the hard work and energy of everyone involved with this important development and raises the bar for all future public sector schemes in the region.”
Rosalie Monbiot, Cabinet Member for Children's Services, said: "This is a very inspirational facility and its success is well-deserved. Thousands of people of all ages have visited the centre to enjoy activities like sailing, windsurfing and canoeing.
I am delighted that so many young people, in particular, have been able to use the centre to exercise, learn and to have fun."
