Formica - AWARD-WINNING FORMICA® CHEMTOP2™ IS THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR UNIVERSITY SCIENCE LABORATORY RE-FIT

Formica Ltd's Chemtop2™ has been installed to provide specially-designed work benching and fume cupboard sections in a re-fit at the Laboratories at Sussex University’s Brighton Campus. Using specialist papers and incorporating a remarkable chemical-resistant coating during manufacture, Formica Chemtop2 provides an ideal solution for this type of environment.
Recognised for its outstanding performance characteristics, Chemtop2 was recently chosen to feature in the Innovation category of the Construction Products Association’s Innovation and Achievement Awards. It is the latest innovation in High Pressure Laminate (HPL) and is uniquely available in both standard postforming and structural compact grade laminate, in a range of designs and thicknesses.
In this project Brite White was selected, at a 19mm thickness, to form the worktops and splashbacks, and other work areas. Excalibur Design has also specified Chemtop2 in another phase of the project which will be fitted in the next few months.
“We knew the type of product we wanted for the Laboratories. It needed to be a highly practical and hard-wearing solution in this particular environment, and we were advised that Formica Limited manufactured Chemtop2 in the UK. It was ideal, competitively priced, and we are very pleased with the results,” said Graeme Bartholomew, Project Manager at Excalibur Design.
Chemtop2 is ideal for use in environments where relatively harsh acids, alkalis, corrosive salts or other destructive or staining substances are used. It can be used for all horizontal and vertical surface applications, including worksurfaces and splashbacks, and in the construction of cabinets and fume cupboards.
The University of Sussex was the first of the new wave of universities founded in the 1960s, receiving its Royal Charter in August 1961. Forty years on, the University has become a leading teaching and research institution, characterised by a number of academic strengths including research excellence, internationalism and interdisciplinarity.
Excalibur Design is a UK-based company specialising in the design of cubicle systems and laminate fabrication. It has worked with and completed laminate fabrication projects for many of the largest companies in the South East including American Express, Reading University, as well as many schools, colleges and businesses, and has worked closely with a number of main contractors such as Mansell, Osborne and Bluestone.
