£175m PFI Project
Support services and construction company Carillion
has handed over the remaining five Barnsley schools
which were part of a major £175m Private Finance
Initiative (PFI) contract both on time and to budget
this week.
The contract to design, build, finance and operate 13
new build primary schools at various locations
throughout Barnsley district will boost education
facilities for thousands of Barnsley school children.
The final five schools to be handed over this week were:
Cherrydale Primary, Pipers Grove Primary, Joseph Locke
Primary, Darton Primary and Sandhill Primary.
The contract was initially for design and build capital
works to be carried out over a two-year period with
Carillion providing maintenance services for a further
25 years.
Contracts Manager Brendan Lunn said: “We are delighted
with the end result of the schools. We look forward to a
long and successful relationship with our partners
Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and the schools.
“We are thrilled that we’ve handed over all 13 schools
on time and to budget.”
Carillion’s hard work and enthusiasm during the major
building project has been praised by local Councillor
and spokesperson for Children, Young People and
Families, Linda Burgess.
Councillor Burgess said: “These new schools will prove a
huge boost in continuing to improve education standards
in Barnsley. I would like to thank Carillion for its
hard work and enthusiasm so far, and the council is
looking forward to a long and productive working
relationship that will prove of great benefit to the
children in the Borough.”
