UK Green Building Council - UKGBC New Chief Executive Secures
Support of M&S
In his first week as the new Chief Executive of the
UK Green Building Council, Paul King has secured the
support of Marks & Spencer as the first retailer to join
the UK GBC.
M&S will join over 100 members of the Council, including
38 Founding Members, which have pledged support since
its launch in February of this year.
Paul King said: “We’re delighted that M&S has joined us
as a Founding Member. Retail property accounts for 17
per cent of commercial buildings and 24 per cent of new
commercial building each year, so without the support of
the retail sector, the UK GBC will not fulfil its remit.
“M&S’ ‘Plan A’ commitments to environmental and social
issues, coupled with its drive to develop sustainable
solutions for retail construction, make it an ideal
retail partner for the UK GBC.”
Richard Gillies, Director of Store Design, Development
and Procurement, said: “When we launched ‘Plan A’, our
five-year, 100-point eco plan in January this year, we
set ourselves some deliberately ambitious targets, some
of which we don’t yet have all the answers to.
“Joining the Council will allow us to work with other
members and use their knowledge, expertise and
experience to help us identify the right solutions to
some of our challenges. We’re delighted to be on board.”
Two Founding Members of the UK GBC, Willmott Dixon and
Faber Maunsell, are currently working on converting the
Marks & Spencer Bournemouth store due to open later this
year.
The Bournemouth store ‘eco-conversion’ is part of M&S’
on-going investment in its store remodel programme, the
largest of its kind currently being undertaken in the UK
that will see 70 per cent of the store portfolio
modernised by Christmas 2007.
