Shrewsbury Environmental Technology Centre - Victorian waterworks is environmental showcase for 21st century Britain

A 19th century waterworks and pumping station on the banks of the River Severn is being turned into one of the most environmentally advanced office buildings in Britain.
It is already proving to be a major success with businesses for, with more than six months to go before building and renovation work is completed, the Pump House in the medieval market town of Shrewsbury is already more than 60% pre-
let.
The 9,000 sq ft environmental technology centre - a mixture of conversion and new build in a £1.8 million private/public sector partnership - will have 70% fewer harmful emissions compared to standard new offices.
The reduction is being achieved through the use of biomass for heating, solar photovoltaics for electricity, heat recovery from ventilation, rainwater recovery, and very high levels of insulation.
And once the occupiers - including international Shropshire business Water Management Consultants and UK climate change, energy efficiency and renewable energy organisation Marches Energy Agency - move in, there will be live measurement and reporting of energy consumption, on-site separation for recycling, and energy management policies for each business.
It is envisaged that most of the tenants will be environment technology businesses that will be mutually supportive of and also benefit from each other's activities.
A section of the building is being reserved as an incubator element to support start-up businesses.
Destination Shrewsbury's Manager David Griffiths said: "The Pump House is a double triumph. Not only is it a blueprint for creating environmentally friendly buildings in the years to come, but it is also proving to be a magnet for go ahead and environmentally aware businesses."
