Hammerson UK Properties plc - Top architects enticed by Leeds Project

A STRING of leading architects from across Europe are already expressing interest in working on the new Eastgate Quarters scheme in Leeds after the development was granted outline planning permission.
The overall masterplan for the £675million 100,000 m² retail-led scheme, which is being developed by Hammerson plc and Town Centre Securities plc, has been created by internationally renowned architect Sir Terry Farrell who played host to more than 100 architecture practices interested in working on the scheme earlier this year at MIPIM.
Jean Dent, director of development at Leeds City Council, explained: “This development is very exciting for Leeds and will help to secure the city’s place on the European stage. We are delighted to be attracting so many renowned architects from across the UK and beyond. Although the approach of broadening the team is unusual, it reflects the excitement and anticipation that surrounds the project and means that the scheme will have a truly unique and distinguished identity.”
Sir Terry Farrell added: “As well as these large practices, there are plenty of opportunities for smaller firms to get involved. Any companies that share our passion for creating a valuable piece of the city, that can show a commitment to the concept and work in collaboration with other organisations should consider working on this project.”
The scheme will be anchored by a 24,150 m² John Lewis store and will include over 100 retail units, office accommodation, restaurants and bars, a hotel, up to 600 new homes and 2,700 associated car parking spaces. It is anticipated that construction of the Eastgate Quarters will begin in 2009, with completion in 2012.
Any architects interested in working on the scheme should visit www.eastgateleeds.co.uk/architects for information about the selection criteria and details of how to register interest. The selection process will start during the summer.
