Edmond Shipway - Doing it in style for Habitat
Construction consultants Edmond Shipway in Cambridge
have won a major contract to oversee the fit out and
refurbishment of both new and existing Habitat stores.
The contract has begun with the fit out of Habitat’s
newly relocated store in Cambridge, moving into a prime
position on Cambridge Retail Park from its previous
premises in Fitzroy Street.
The new store has an oblong interior with a mezzanine
first floor with a design concept that makes it easy to
change the look of the store according to seasonal and
merchandising requirements.
Edmond Shipway Associate Darren Lee, who heads up the
Habitat account and is part of the practice’s national
team of retail experts, oversaw the fitting out of the
Cambridge store, said it was the beginning of a fit out
programme that the retailer is undertaking.
“New Habitat stores include the fit-out of a 20,000 sq
ft shell development, typically over a nine week period.
The Habitat concept for all new stores and refurbishment
schemes promotes the use of natural materials such as
stone, timber or rubber-based floor finishes,” he said.
“To add value Edmond Shipway has developed and
implemented the use of change control to Habitat’s
capital expenditure process, which has aided in the
successful delivery of recent projects within budget and
ahead of timetable.”
Habitat's Head of UK Property and Procurement Len
Robertson said that the choice of Edmond Shipway as cost
managers had already borne dividends.
“Habitat has recently embarked on a large property
portfolio assessment of our existing stores together
with pin pointing the UK locations where we intend to
open new stores.
“Our aim is to refresh our existing stores, prevent
brand damage, address health and safety issues and
introduce conceptual cohesion across our stores. For new
stores we have evolved our existing concept, introducing
more natural materials, a flexible fixture package that
can easily refresh the store layout / seasonal change
and a more customer friendly colour finishes palette
“To aid in this large capital expenditure programme I
was keen to introduce greater financial controls for
every project Habitat undertake. I have introduced a six
stage project process plan that gives our business
greater cost certainty and financial control through all
stages of the build from scheme conception to
completion.
“For this process to work it was essential that I
develop and expand the role of our consulting quantity
surveyor, Darren Lee of Edmond Shipway.
“With Darren's enthusiastic help, knowledge and
understanding of our business we have delivered a
working process that Habitat’s in-house teams and
outside suppliers have bought into and feel comfortable
with. Using this process model our first two projects
have been delivered on time and under budget
“Edmond Shipway's expertise in financial projections,
control of budgets, robust cost reporting and project
management has enabled Habitat to have greater cost
certainty and confidence. The service that Edmond
Shipway has provided for Habitat has greatly assisted us
to expand our retail offer within our UK market place.”
