Module house off-site constructionModule house off-site constructionBarton Willmore - Barton Willmore unveils plans for new housing development in Shepton Mallet

The Bristol arm of Barton Willmore, one of the UK’s leading architectural, planning and design consultancies has successfully secured planning permission and unveiled plans for 69 new dwellings on a brownfield site in the centre of Shepton Mallet, Somerset.
The site, owned by Bellway Homes, which has been approved for a new residential development forms part of a much larger site which is under construction with a supermarket, non-food shops, petrol filling station and family restaurant. Barton Willmore provided detailed town planning, urban design and extensive architectural services for the residential development.Development on the site, which was previously occupied by Huntsman plastics factory and Grigg's shoe makers, will begin shortly and will comprise of a mix of dwelling types:
• 12 x 1 bedroom flats
• 34 x 2 bedroom flats
• 15 x 3 bedroom houses
• 8 x 4 bedroom houses
• Fifteen of the 69 dwellings will be affordable dwellings for local people
• six of the affordable dwellings will be earmarked for elderly people
The architects at Barton Willmore have designed the dwellings individually for the site so that they have a very bespoke feel and reflect the character of the existing houses in the historic centre of this Mendip town. The buildings have been designed so that they form short terraces and mews courts and will be finished in stone and render under pantile and slate roofs.
Barton Willmore consulted local residents and the town council throughout the process and the high quality design was welcomed by all consulted. The application was recommended for approval by officers and granted unanimously by committee on 23rd May.
Said Ian Mellor, Partner, Barton Willmore: “We worked hard to ensure that we consulted with the local residents of Shepton Mallet to ensure that the scheme was sympathetic to the local area but also met their needs. The development has been carefully designed to have a strong sense of place whilst fitting into the informal street pattern and urban form of the town centre."
