Alpha Rail - RAILINGS PART OF DORCHESTER PARK REFURBISHMENT
Railings and gates are as important in parks as doors
are on houses for protecting security and enhancing the
overall aesthetic appeal.
Dorchester Borough Gardens in Dorchester on the South
Coast has recently undergone a £1.6m renovation that was
made possible by the Heritage Lottery Fund and making
the area more secure and appealing to families was one
of the driving forces behind the project.
Bespoke architectural metalwork specialists Alpha Rail
successfully tendered for both the supply and
installation of perimeter railings to the park and
internal fencing. The company supplied 650 metres of
vertical bar railing to Dorchester Town Council for the
perimeter of the park plus 160 metres of interlaced bow
top fencing for the children’s play areas inside the
park.
The project involved a complete refurbishment of the
park which has had hardly any perimeter security since
railings were removed during World War II. The new
perimeter railings replicated the style of the previous
railings and gates, which were designed to maximise
security and prevent access to the park at night. The
park’s complete renovation included new play areas and
the refurbishment of an existing fountain. The railings
were painted on site in an attractive grey finish that
complemented the hedges and plantings.
Alpha Rail, which is based in Nottinghamshire, has
extensive experience in park restoration. The company
was presented with a plaque to celebrate their part in
the project at a special opening ceremony for the park,
attended by hundreds of local residents as well as the
local Mayor.
Phil Ball, sales director, explains: “It is always
satisfying to be able to provide railings for parks that
mean so much to a local community, as they did here. The
railings give the park much better protection and should
help it retain its attractive appearance and provide a
safe haven for local residents.
We were delighted to be involved with such a prestigious
project.”
Dennis Holmes from Dorchester Town Council explains:
“The railings have made a huge difference to the park
and to local people. An important part of the renovation
was to ensure that the plants, play areas and other
features were protected, which is the reason why we
required high quality railings and gates. Alpha Rail
supplied a high quality product that closely replicated
the previous railings, their attention to detail was
impeccable and we were more than satisfied with their
service. The end results speak for themselves and we
have received much positive feedback from local
residents and visitors to the area.”
Dorchester Borough Gardens is the latest in a list of
prestigious parks that Alpha Rail has supplied with new
gates and railings, with others including Battersea Park
in Wandsworth (winner of a Civic Trust Award), Roundhay
Park in Leeds and Handsworth Park in Birmingham.
