Burlington Slate - Burlington makes a feature of itself at outlet shopping village

Shoppers visiting Castleford’s Junction 32 Outlet Shopping Village can seek respite from the rigours of retail therapy by escaping to the sanctuary of the development’s four ‘piazza’ spaces and interlinking streetscapes, one of which features two authentic water features created out of Burlington natural stone.
Whilst forming part of an homogenous scheme developed by York-based Landscape Architects and contractors, LCD Ltd, on behalf of their clients, Realm and Shepherd Construction, the Burlington stone water features have been designed to help deliver a distinct identity to the piazza by highlighting the aesthetic and functional qualities of the surrounding space.
Serving to help sooth and invigorate the senses, each water feature is clad in a combination of Burlington’s olive green Bursting Stone and silver/grey Brandy Crag natural stone supplied with a gritblasted and flamed finish. In taking the form of apposing comma punctuation marks, the water features help deliver a subliminal message that echoes the grammatical definition of the comma – the need to pause, whilst allowing for reflection within the surrounding environment.
Constructed featuring a series of steps that both reduce in height and width from the comma’s top to tail, using a combination of the two different stone colours and finishes helps increase the texture and hence substance of each water feature structure.
Commenting on behalf of LCD Ltd, director, Simon Prince said: “We specified Burlington’s natural stone for the water features as part of the Junction 32 scheme having worked with the company on a previous scheme, Xscape, also in Castleford. Here Burlington supplied random walling stone that featured within a number freestanding wire basket features.”
He added: ‘Not only does the visual appearance of the stone fit perfectly with designs that we created for the water features, we were confident that Burlington had the ability and experience to work with us throughout the whole design and construction process.
“They are an excellent, professional, helpful and genuinely great company to work with and who are not afraid to provide invaluable technical advice,” he concluded.
In addition to featuring the two Burlington water features that dominate the centre of this piazza space is complimented by a variety of other hard and soft landscaping features that take in planters or tree pits constructed from Iroko timber and which feature trees from Germany and soil from Amsterdam. Not to mention benches that were recycled from the previous site and granite from China.
Junction 32 Outlet Shopping Village provides the public with access to over 90 outlet stores that take in a huge selection of leading brands from retailers such as Denby, Rockport, Nike, Reebok, Monsoon and M&S.
