Energy savings are set to save
Costco Stores between 50%-70% by using the new
Dedham® Twin IFan system from Fläkt Woods.
“This will provide Costco a return in investment via
the Government’s Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECAs)
1, and offers major contributions to Costco’s energy
saving objectives, supporting the Governments
programme to manage climate change.” says Mark Cox,
a partner in Faarup Associates, consultant engineers
for Costco for the past 5 years. Faarup has been
tasked with saving more energy via ventilation
systems for all future Costco stores.
In order to do this Faarup looked at several
options, including ideas from Fläkt Woods, the
manufacturers who provided the extract systems for
previous UK stores including Watford, Birmingham,
Glasgow, Chester, Sheffield and Milton Keynes.
Faarup followed the current environment policy in
trying to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the
Costco distribution centres.
“Fläkt units have always provided both durability
and ease of maintenance in other Costco stores, so I
tasked the Company with finding an energy saving
solution for the other stores”, says Cox.
A solution was found and Fläkt Woods undertook a
trial installation of the Dedham® Twin IFAN at the
Watford site to see what energy savings could be
obtained. The areas focused on were: customer café,
hot chicken rotisserie and the bakery.
Reducing energy consumption via the current extract
system, in conjunction with the existing BMS system,
incorporating sensory technology, has provided more
innovative, energy efficient technologies.
“The results of the trial demonstrate savings of
over 50% in the energy required to run the extract
fans and offer a payback via ECA to Costco in under
2 years. Designs for the Cardiff store are underway,
where we will use the new Fläkt Woods system again”,
continues Cox.
Costco is a fast growing UK retailer, as of the 5th
December 2006 the Company had 19 locations providing
a wide selection of merchandise, plus the
convenience of speciality departments and exclusive
member services.
