Cembrit Blunn - Jutland slates are 'on top' at award-winning
housing project
Impressive curved roofing designs at award-winning retirement
development, Denham Garden Village, have been created with the aid
of Jutland slates from Cembrit Blunn. The durable, man-made Jutland
slate range was selected by the project team to ensure the roof
combined aesthetic appeal with the highest possible performance
standards.
Owned by the Anchor Trust (the largest not-for-profit provider of
housing, support and care in England) the Village is currently
undergoing a £60m reconstruction by main contractor Inspace
Partnership (part of Willmott Dixon). Comprised of 326 one and two-bedroomed
flats and cottages, plus an impressive range of facilities, the new
scheme recently picked up ‘Best Retirement Development’ at the Daily
Telegraph ‘What House Awards’.
PRP was appointed by the Anchor Trust to design the project up to
planning permission stage, and has subsequently worked with the main
contractor on detailed designs and the working drawing package. As
project architect, Colin Geere of PRP points out “The original
intention would have been to use concrete interlocking tiles for the
roof. However, the curved plan form of some roofs prevented this.”
He adds “Jutland slates were selected as the most appropriate
solution from both an aesthetic and economic viewpoint.”
Sourced and fitted by Michael Hall Roofing of London, Jutland is an
attractive, flat, square-edged fibre cement slate that is
manufactured to the highest European standards. Lightweight and
pre-holed, Jutland slates are easy to handle and install and
particularly suitable for this type of large-scale housing
construction project where a cost-effective alternative to natural
slate is desirable.
Jutland slates are manufactured using Portland cement with a
non-asbestos formulation of superior blended synthetic cellulose
fibres. The slates are finished with a high-quality semi-matt
acrylic coating and produced to BS EN 492:2004, and manufactured
under the control of a BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 quality management
system.
