Carrier Air Conditioning - Carrier air conditioned stadia at Asian Games
Integrated Carrier systems including chillers, air handling
units and fan coils were applied on three of the five main
stadia constructed or rebuilt and restyled for the recent Asian
Games in Doha, the capital of Qatar. At the Games, Carrier also
supplied the chillers for the Al-Hodaifi Olympic Committee
administration tower.
Five Carrier chillers, twenty-eight Carrier air handling units
and four Carrier fan coil units were used to cool the indoor
stadium at the Al-Rayyan Sports Club. This main stadium has a
capacity of 25,000 making it jointly the second largest used by
the Games. It hosted the Hockey and football events.
The same air conditioning combination was also used at the Al-Gharrafa
Sports Club which hosted football and handball. Four global
chillers, fifteen air handling units and more than a hundred fan
coil units were incorporated into the Al-Sadd Sports Club
stadium, which also hosted the football tournament and the
water-polo event.
The games themselves have been popularly applauded as a great
success bringing forty-five teams and three quarters of a
million spectators together from all over the Middle and Far
East to participate in thirty-nine sports where thirty-three
World or Asian records were broken. The next Asian Games will be
held at Guangzhou, China in 2010.
This latest experience of applying equipment effectively in
large sports arenas has added to the immense bank of expertise
that Carrier already holds from its major role in providing
large proportions of the air conditioning in nearly all of the
Olympic cities in recent decades. It has also proven that it has
the sophisticated controls and maintenance expertise that is
required at large venues. At the Athens Olympics the air
conditioning equipment was remotely monitored by a Carrier
system and standby Carrier maintenance teams were on hand, if
needed.
